The Social Afforestation Project Michoacan (SAPM) of Fair Travel aims at maintaining and rehabilitating the natural resources and biodiversity as well as at introducing a long-term alternative of income generation for the rural population living in this Western Mexican state.
The project focuses on the introduction of sustainable forestry in the selected local rural communities, especially for small farmers with a cultivation area between 1 and 5 ha who will benefit most from this project.
As a result of the sustainable reforestation efforts of Fair Travel, natural resources are rehabilitated and preserved and alternative forms of income generation for the local population are introduced.
Local farmers who are supporting the project are hired in the right season (June to September) to plant and cultivate the seedlings of the reforestation area. In doing so, they receive hands-on training on the best way of selecting, handling and cultivating tree seedlings.
The necessary technical training is being provided by local non-profit organizations and the Forestry Department of the State of Michoacan. Together with international specialists on sustainable forest management appointed to the reforestation project, they are equipped to transfer the required know-how and systematic approach for achieving the desired long-term ecological and economic impact.
Finally, a specific forest monitoring system ensures that the reforestation area is continuously under supervision and adequately controlled.
